Supporting the MacroSheds project- a dataset which integrates stream and river chemistry data from datasets across the united states, and some beyond, as well as supporting data collected from satellite image analysis and other techniques.
This data is extracted and curated in R, JavaScript, and Python, and using technologies like Google Earth Engine.
Developing a website for this data, the MacroSheds portal, which provides not only access to the data, but tools for insight and analysis-
providing opportunities for scientists, stakeholders, and the public alike.

This data has been carefully curated and combined to streamline access and ease of macrosystems analysis of previously siloed water chemistry data
To support access and increase impact, this data is available through a portal, which also has in-site graphic and geographic data exploration and analysis tools
The portal and dataset are both expanding and improving, with goals to offer only better and better access and tools on top of a growing pool of combined data
NaKnowBase
an EPA ORD Database of Nanomaterials Research
NaKnowBase is a MySQL database of EPA nanomaterials research
There is an international effort for 'linked data' in the field of bioinformatics and specifically in nanomaterial research
Semantic techonologies- Resource Description Framework (RDF), Web Ontology Language (OWL), and SPARQL RDF Query Language (SPARQL), provide the means to rigorously define and retrieve information by agreed upon, discrete, and unique identifiers.
I am supporting EPA efforts to integrate EPA Research into internationally accepted ontologies for bioinformation
My research is centered around developing Python software using a variety of search algorithms for natural language processing of SQL-derived strings and ontologies to perform accurate mapping- robust to extreme heterogeneity in data type, source, and content
These efforts present an approach to overcoming traditional stumbling blocks in domestic and international research- siloed and uniteroperable data- with the potential to allow for unprecedented collaboration and leveraging of related data to answer important questions in the field of chemical safety and beyond
Effect of Climate and Land Use on 20 years of Citizen Science Water Quality Data
in a California Sierra Nevada Foothills Watershed
Sierra Streams institute's team of staff and citizen scientists have been collecting Nitrate, Phosphate, Temperature, pH, E. Coli, and other water quality metricsmonthly at 18 sites in the Deer Creek watershed for the last 20 years
Using Google Earth Engine (GEE) to access LANDSAT imagery, as well as the USGS California Basin Characterization Model (CalBCM) climate data set, we were able to collect land use and climate data for that time period as well
We are using this data to develop a structural equation model to quanitify how climate and land use may have been effecting water quality in Deer Creek over the last 20 years
In support of developing this model, I used JavaScript in GEE, worked with NetCDF files from CalBCM in R, and employed a multitude of data curation, extraction, and management tools to get our data set together and valid
Then, I explored the data set with multivariate analysis methods such as Prinicpal Component Analysis and Z-plots
The project is still in progress, with final model runs and a manuscript being drafted currently
A wonderful aspect of this project was handling the data all the way from the stream, through the lab, through R, and into the manuscript
Effect of Flow Augmentation on Salmonid Foraging Behaviour, Invertebrates, and Water Quality
in a California Stream
Porter Creek is a salmon-bearing tributary to the Russian River in Northern California.
Porter creek, like many salmon-bearing creeks in the region, experiences varying degrees of intermittent surface flow during the California dry season.
This intermittency can be exaggereated by climate and land use ffects. Much research and funding is going into understanding how to retain salmon populations in Northern California, and in particular, how to maintain them in intermittent streams such as Porter Creek, which make up a substantial and growing portion of California's salmon habitat.
Porter Creek, through a unique partnership between government and private landowners, has a pump and set of pipelines which can divert water from a vineyward reservoir into the creek with a controllable schedule and flow.
This research project aimed to study the potential effects of this flow on juvenile salmonid behaviour, physical habitat, and invertebrate communities.
The study used a Before After Control Impact (BACI) design, and utilized both standard and cutting edge measurement techniques- surveying pool habitat, developing rating curves, sampling benthic macroinvertebrates, and using 3-D videogrammatric methods to quantify fish movement and behavour.
One part of this great experience was being able to work on the same research project first as a researcher at UC Berkeley, and later with SeaGrant. It was wonderful getting to be part of both sides of the work, and learning about collaborative research from different perspectives
This varied experience would continue, as I would later conduct research with small non-profit (SSI), and then the federal government (EPA) each of which were engaged in multiple projects with other types of research istitutions as well
